Adventure Awaits: Motorhome Maintenance Musts

Are you gearing up for an adventure on the open road this summer? Just like any vehicle, motorhomes require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and to avoid unexpected breakdowns. Before you give in to your wanderlust, it's important to ensure that your home-on-wheels is in top-notch condition. We are here to help you prepare your motorhome for your next epic road trip.

Regular maintenance checks should be performed per your owner’s manual timeline. If not used often enough to go by mileage, then it is recommended that you do them once a year. My grandpa does his every six months, and he only goes on one trip a year to quench his wanderlust. He also used to be a train mechanic, so I trust his methodology. Here is what you should be checking regularly on your motorhome.

1. Engine and Fluids: Start with the basics. Regularly check your motorhome's engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid levels. Keep these topped up as per the manufacturer's recommendations.

2. Tires: Inspect your tires for wear and tear, including the sidewalls and tread depth. Properly inflated tires not only ensure safety but also contribute to better fuel efficiency. Don't forget to check the spare tire too!

3. Battery: Test your motorhome's battery to ensure it's holding a charge. Clean the terminals and connections to prevent corrosion and consider carrying jumper cables just in case.

4. Brakes: Have a mechanic inspect your motorhome's brakes to ensure they're in good working condition. Spongy brakes or unusual noises when braking could indicate a problem.

5. Electrical System: Check all lights, including headlights, taillights, turn signals, and brake lights. Ensure that electrical outlets and appliances inside the motorhome are functioning correctly.

6. Propane System: If your motorhome uses propane for cooking, heating, or refrigeration, inspect the system for leaks and ensure that all connections are secure.

7. Water System: Test faucets, toilets, and showers for proper operation. Look for leaks in the water lines and check the integrity of the water pump and water heater.

8. Generator: We recommend driving your vehicle and operating the generator for an hour each month. This will keep batteries charged and rubber components such as tires, belts, and hoses limber for longevity.

Preparing for a road trip can be chaotic and sometimes overwhelming but I am hoping that the following list will help make this process much easier. For more information check out our blog article Road Trip Ready, it has a checklist for any road trip whether it be by car, truck, or motorhome.

1. Checklists are Your Friend: Before hitting the road, create a checklist of essential items to pack, including bedding, kitchen supplies, toiletries, and any specific gear for your planned activities.

2. Safety First: Ensure that you have a fully stocked first-aid kit and that all safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers and smoke detectors, is in good working order.

3. Plan Your Route: Research your route ahead of time, noting any potential road closures, construction zones, or low-clearance bridges that may pose a challenge for your motorhome.

4. Emergency Kit: Pack an emergency kit containing essentials such as a flashlight, batteries, tools, duct tape, spare fuses, and a tire repair kit. It's better to be over-prepared than stranded on the side of the road.

5. Stay Organized: Utilize storage space efficiently to keep your motorhome clutter-free during the trip. Secure loose items to prevent them from shifting while driving.

6. Regular Pit Stops: Plan for regular stops to rest, refuel, and stretch your legs. This not only helps prevent driver fatigue but also gives your motorhome a chance to cool down and allows you to perform quick visual inspections for any issues.

7. Enjoy the Journey: This is the best tip I can give; remember that road trips are about the journey as much as the destination. Take time to appreciate the scenery, try local cuisine, and make memories along the way.

I love a great adventure on the open road, and I have learned the not-so-easy way how to prepare for each trip. I hope that by following these maintenance tips and pre-trip checks, you'll be well-prepared to embark on an unforgettable road trip in your motorhome. So, let’s buckle up, hit the road, and let the journey begin!

Until Next Time, Stay Safe Everyone!
