Purchasing a used car can be a maze of potential pitfalls or a treasure trove of opportunities. I am here to equip you with the knowledge required to help you make an informed decision. Let's dive into this journey together.
Back to Class
I know, I know, you thought you were done with homework for good; but when you’re making a big financial decision wouldn’t you rather be fully prepared? Before you make it to the buying process, you must first put in the work. Look over your budget, decide on how much you’re willing to spend, and set yourself a maximum price limit. Don’t share this with the potential seller but it is crucial to have this in mind when you start shopping. Go online and shop around your local area; see what your price range could get you. Be aware that the used car market values are overinflated at this time but I am sure that with this guide, you will find a great deal for you.
First Impressions
The exterior of a car is your first impression. While a shiny paint job and sparkling rims may be eye-catching, appearances can be deceiving. It is essential to look beyond the surface and be aware of potential issues. Check the wear on the tires for tread depth & uneven wear, this could indicate an alignment or suspension issue. Check for gaps in the body panels, mismatched paint, and cracks in the glass; this could indicate that the vehicle was in an accident.
Inner Beauty
While the exterior can be important, we all know that it’s what’s inside that counts! Check that the upholstery is undamaged, clean, & free of any odors. While in the vehicle check for functioning heat, air conditioning, window switches, locks, and radio controls. Look for signs of water damage on the floorboard or the smell of mildew.
Under the Hood
The engine is the heart and soul of your new car. Belts, hoses, and fluid levels must be well-maintained. Any leaks or faults could indicate that the car is not a good investment. We highly recommend either taking a mechanic with you or planning with the seller for a pre-purchase inspection. Many auto repair facilities offer a pre-purchase inspection. Here at Kacals, we perform Used Car Inspections and Buyer Inspections for not only individuals but also for our fleet customers.
The Test Drive
A test drive is crucial. I know you love your tunes but let’s leave the radio off and listen for any unusual sounds during your test drive. You can always test the radio when you get back but listening to your vehicle will help you to know when things are off with your car. While driving, pay attention to the handling, and sightlines, as well as assess if the vehicle has enough power for your needs. The goal is to ensure that your new car runs smoothly and meets all your demands.
The Paper Trail
A clean history is fundamental. Ensure that the car comes with service records, a clean title, and a Carfax report. You can run your own vehicle history report if the seller is not willing to supply you with one. All you need is the VIN (vehicle identification number) and you can use Carfax or AutoCheck to get a report that contains information like how many owners it has had, where it came from, and if it has been in any accidents.
Making the Deal
Negotiation can feel like the trickiest part of the used car buying process, but it doesn’t have to be. If you’ve done your homework, know your budget, understand the fair market value, and are willing to haggle; then this will not be an overwhelming task. Let the seller know that you are aware of the market value of the vehicle and then give them an offer. Remember to lead with an offer that is lower than your max price to give yourself wiggle room for a counteroffer. If you and the seller are just too far off then walk away from it, avoid being rushed into a decision before you are ready. It’s worth it to take a little extra time to ensure that you are comfortable with your financial decision. Remember, the goal ahead of both you and the seller should feel like a win-win situation.
Buying a car can feel like a daunting quest but when you’re equipped with the right knowledge and a keen eye, then you are ready to navigate the used car market with ease.
Happy Trails, Friends!
