Hey there, scent-sational people! 🌸✨ Today, we're diving into the world of fragrance oils. Sure, they smell divine and can turn any space into a zen den or a cozy haven, but lurking behind those lovely scents might be some sneaky chemicals that aren’t so friendly to our health. Let’s break it down, so you can make informed choices and still enjoy your favorite aromas without the icky stuff.
Our Fragrant Foe: Harmful Chemicals to Watch Out For
Phthalates
What They Are: These are a group of chemicals used to make fragrances last longer and be more potent.
Why They’re Harmful: Phthalates are linked to hormone disruption and can impact reproductive health. Yikes! They’ve also been associated with respiratory issues and skin irritation.
Parabens
What They Are: Preservatives that help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in products.
Why They’re Harmful: Parabens are known for mimicking estrogen in the body, which can disrupt hormonal balance and potentially increase the risk of breast cancer. Not cool!
Synthetic Musks
What They Are: These are artificial compounds used to create that “fresh” or “sweet” scent.
Why They’re Harmful: Synthetic musks can accumulate in body tissues and have been linked to hormonal disruption and potential impacts on reproductive health.
Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Releasers
What They Are: Formaldehyde is a strong-smelling chemical used as a preservative, and its releasers gradually release formaldehyde over time.
Why They’re Harmful: This stuff is a known carcinogen and can cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, and more. No thanks!
Petroleum-Based Ingredients
What They Are: These are chemicals derived from petroleum, often used as solvents or carriers in fragrance products.
Why They’re Harmful: Petroleum-based ingredients can be irritating to the skin and respiratory system and may contribute to long-term health issues.
A Fragrance-Free Zone: U.S. Regulations vs. Other Countries
Here’s the scoop: when it comes to regulating harmful chemicals in fragrances, the United States doesn’t exactly lead the pack. In fact, it lags behind more than 80 other nations in terms of stringency and oversight. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does regulate some aspects of cosmetics and personal care products, the standards are often less rigorous compared to those in other parts of the world. I don’t tell you this to scare you but I was not aware of this issue and wish that someone would have informed me before I was 30 years old! Below are some examples for your reference.
The European Union (EU): The EU has some of the strictest regulations on chemicals in cosmetics. They ban or restrict over 1,300 chemicals that are deemed unsafe for use in personal care products. This includes a hefty number of harmful fragrance ingredients that are still permitted in the U.S.
Canada: Canada’s regulations are also more stringent compared to the U.S. They have banned or restricted many of the same chemicals that the EU has, and they continuously update their list of prohibited substances to keep up with new research.
Japan: Known for its rigorous safety standards, Japan restricts the use of many potentially harmful chemicals, including those used in fragrances, far more than the U.S. does.
In the U.S., the FDA does not require companies to list all the ingredients in their fragrance blends, which means you might unknowingly be exposed to harmful chemicals. The term “fragrance” or “parfum” can conceal a mix of potentially problematic substances. We as a country have about 11 banned chemicals and that falls very short of most other countries.
Watch Out For Those Red Flags…
When you’re scanning product labels (and you should be!), keep an eye out for these red flags:
“Fragrance” or “Parfum”: This term can mask a cocktail of potentially harmful chemicals. If it’s not specified as natural or essential oils, be cautious. We do not disclose our exact recipes on our bottles due to space but you can always find the oils used on our website.
“Contains Phthalates”: Some labels might explicitly state this, but if it’s not clear, assume it might be present. Our natural scents may not last as long as those with phthalates, but at least our products have no red flags to speak of! Unless you become obsessed with them, like me!
“Parabens”: Look for products labeled “paraben-free” to avoid these chemicals. We love using sodium benzoate, sorbic acid, citric acid, benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol and potassium sorbate to preserve our products..
“Synthetic Musks”: Sometimes labeled as “musk” or “musk x,” but not always clear. Check for natural alternatives instead. We use Ambrette seed oil here at Moonlight to bring you that amazing musky scent without the red flags!
“Formaldehyde”: Make sure your products are free from this ingredient, especially in personal care items.
